Demeter

Demeter, who is she? Demeter is one of the most important goddess from Greek Times. She is known as the goddess of harvest and agriculture. Demeter is also the daughter of Cronos and Rhea, siblings of Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, and Hestia. Supposedly she, along with the other gods and goddesses, live on Mount Olympus to watch upon us "mortals" or human race. Many tribes from back them depended on her for good plantation. A mother figure is seen through Demeter because she is a caretaker, until she failed to do her job once. Zeus was so angry she promised to send her daughter, the spring goddess Persephone, to the underworld god, Hades. The only problem was that Zeus had failed to consult her about the impending marriage, so not knowing what happened, Demeter went in vain looking for her long missed daughter. Because of this, humans prayed. Supposedly on the human land there was tragedy happening to their plants. The plants would get dry or there would be droughts. People praying asked for the return of Persephone but Zeus knew that Hades would be furious if he was to have her taken away. So he sent Hermes (messenger) also known for a trickster to talk to Hades. Hermes convinced if for as long as the Persephone didn't eat anything from the underworld. Sadly, she failed because she had eaten a single pomegranate. Therefore she had to stay with Hades in the winter to complete her duties as a wife, but in the spring she was allowed to be sent to the mortal world were every spring blossoms with grow and bring new life. Thus, the myth of the seasons were born because of Demeter and Hades compromise. Later then Demeter continued her life as the mother of harvest.

Everyone has different perspective towards goddess and gods, but i believe this one was fascinating. First of all because back then the seasons were the most important effect on humans life. Without a good weather hundreds of people could of died because of lost of food or no medication.I choose this goddess because without were would the world have been for some cultural beliefs. What surprises me the most is the fact that if this myth was true its would make sense in why we have so many different climates at different times. This also benefits many human beings today because in order to be a doctor you need medication and in some poor countries or even on farms now you need a good temperature in order for food to grow and so we won't starve. So not only has this belief benefited tribes or civilizations back then but also now in places where agriculture is still being used.
